Trump’s Audacious Expulsion Plan for Transgender Troops: 15,000 Military Personnel in Danger
On his first day back in office, Donald Trump is prepared to implement a significant shift, and this time, it entails expelling thousands of transgender military personnel.
Trump is preparing to issue an executive order prohibiting transgender people from joining the military, with the goal of disbanding up to 15,000 active-duty members, according to a Times article.
On January 20, 2025, the contentious plan might upend military ranks on the first day of his presidency.
By declaring transgender soldiers medically unfit to serve, this action would essentially terminate their service and result in a wave of discharges throughout the military.
Trump has already announced a dramatic departure from the present military inclusion practices by appointing former Fox News host Pete Hegseth to head the Department of Defense.
Hegseth has long opposed the inclusion of transgender service members, even going so far as to say that allowing transgender persons to serve in the military is problematic because it is “pushing boundaries.”
Hegseth claims that the military finds it more difficult to integrate transgender soldiers than other minorities because of their reliance on hormone therapy, which prevents them from being prepared for deployment.
Trump’s plans to undo the Obama-era regulations that permitted transgender people to serve openly have been fueled by these remarks.
The new regulation would be another conflict in the continuing discussion about LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S. military, despite the fact that the issue is contentious.
However, Trump has previously targeted transgender service members. He startled the country in 2017 when he announced on Twitter that he intended to prohibit transgender individuals from joining the military while he was president.
The White House at the time contended that keeping troops with gender dysphoria put military performance and preparedness at risk because they required extensive medical care.
Trump’s argument for a ban was to spare the military from the transition-related medical expenses, which he said would “burden” the military.
Although activists fiercely opposed this idea, it did represent Trump’s larger anti-LGBTQ+ views, which have been a pillar of his political persona.
In a landmark win for LGBTQ+ rights, the Pentagon removed the prohibition on transgender military service during the Obama administration.
However, that success would be overturned if Trump were to come to office, once more drawing attention to how transgender people are treated in the military.
