Transgender women are not permitted to use the women’s facilities in the Capitol and House office buildings, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson. According to Johnson, this also holds true for locker and changing areas.
“All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” the statement read.
According to Johnson, “It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol.”
The future of the bill introduced by Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina is uncertain.Rep.-elect Sarah McBride’s arrival in Congress prompted Mace to declare on Tuesday that the bill she submitted to prohibit transgender people from accessing women’s toilets at the U.S. Capitol was “absolutely” in response.
“Yes, without a doubt. At the Capitol, Mace told reporters, “And then some.”
“I’m not going to stand for a man, you know, someone with a penis, in the women’s locker room,” she stated.
Although it’s unclear exactly how Johnson intends to implement this policy, House rules grant the speaker “general control” over the facilities.
McBride will be the first openly transgender member of Congress after she was elected earlier this month to serve as Delaware’s only representative in the House.
In a response to Mace, McBride wrote on X, “This is a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing.”
