Daddy Yankee is a single man entering the new year.
After 29 years of marriage, the reggaeton legend revealed that he and his wife, Mireddys González, are divorcing.
“With a heart full of respect and honesty, I want to share some important news about my personal life,” Yankee, whose real name is Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, put in a Spanish-language message posted on his Instagram Stories on December 2. “After more than two decades of marriage and after many months of trying to save my marriage, which my wife and I share, today my lawyers responded to the divorce petition received from Mireddys.”
The 48-year-old, who married González in 1995 when they were both 17, revealed that his religious beliefs will serve as a “constant guide” throughout their wedding.
His words, “I respect Mireddys’ decision,” went on. “I cherish the time we spent together, filled with love, blessings, and values, and with a lovely family that will always come first. Although this is a difficult moment for me, I recognize that it is a natural part of my life.
The singer of “Gasolina” also thanked them for the life they created together, which included their three children, Jeremy, 26, Yamilet, 27, and Jesaaelys, 28.
“I deeply thank those who have accompanied us during this journey and I ask that you respect our privacy in this process,” he said. “I am aware that many people may be surprised by this news. I appreciate your unwavering support. This will be the only thing I say.
González’s representatives were contacted by E! News for comment, but they have not responded.
Over the years, Rodríguez has kept his relationship a secret, although the couple has revealed certain details about their connection. For example, after her husband announced his retirement from music in 2022, González, who was also his former manager and CEO of El Cartel Records, raved over his decades-long career.
In a since-deleted Instagram video, she said in Spanish, “Today I have mixed feelings, I am HAPPY and SAD,” according to People. “I hear you announce to the world that you are retiring from music, which has been your passion for the past thirty years, as we commemorate our 27th wedding anniversary. It will soon be your turn to exit the stage. After all this time, it’s Raymond Ayala’s turn to enjoy what Daddy Yankee has created.
Rodríguez, meantime, has previously considered his wife’s tremendous support throughout the years.
In 2017, he said, “I love her and it’s been a great ride with her,” on Billboard’s Latin Connection Podcast. “Finding a real, real woman is really hard if you’re a superstar. She’s the right one since I knew her before I was Daddy Yankee. To Raymond Ayala, she is devoted. She doesn’t have feelings for DY.
