A’major choice’ has apparently been taken by Michael Schumacher’s wife after the Formula One driver was allegedly the victim of a blackmail operation.
After a skiing accident in the French Alps on December 29, 2013, the Ferrari legend was critically injured.
Schumacher, who was 44 at the time, was wearing a helmet when he fell and struck his head on a rock.
He was placed in a medically-induced coma following severe brain trauma, and when he was able to regain consciousness the following year, he was released from the hospital.
The now-55-year-old has led a very private life since the incident, which his former bodyguard Markus Fritsche was reportedly about to discover.
Fritsche, 53, is charged with stealing films and pictures as part of a £12 million blackmail plan.
Prosecutors claim that he stole roughly 600 documents that contained information regarding Schumacher’s health and secret medical records, in addition to nearly 900 photographs.
On December 10, the three accused men—among them, Yilmaz Tozturkan, 53, and his son Daniel Lins, 30—appeared before Wuppertal District Court.
The seven-time world champion’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, allegedly submitted a motion during the trial to keep information about her husband’s health private.
“The German news outlet BILD claims that she wants to ‘exclude the public from the trial’.”
According to the Mail, Tozturkan, a nightclub bouncer, told the court: “Fritsche and I have known each other for a long time. We met for coffee and stay in touch.
He claimed to have this material and asked if there was anything we could do with it. “I’ll ask, but we can definitely do something,” I said.
“I was given two hard drives: a blue one and a black one.
“I mostly acknowledge everything, but I didn’t purchase the images.
“I initially intended to attempt to sell them, but I got in touch with the Schumacher family after receiving little interest.
“The only assistance I received from my son was an email address. He had no knowledge of the blackmail.
“The data that was accessed here is extremely sensitive,” the senior public prosecutor declared before to the start of the trial.
“The Schumacher family has a strong public interest in keeping Mr. Michael Schumacher’s health a secret. The material we have discovered tells us a lot about this exact circumstance.
