Keira Knightley recently talked about the severe personal difficulties she encountered both while and after working on the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
The 39-year-old actress discussed how the movies both helped establish her career and exposed her to constant public scrutiny in an interview with The Times.
Knightley debuted in the first installment of the popular series, The Curse of the Black Pearl, in 2003 at the age of just 17.
Although the film’s enormous success made her famous throughout the world, it also exposed her to the negative scrutiny of the press.
“Having something that was both making and breaking you at the same time is a funny thing,” she said.
She believed that public opinion was cruel, despite the fact that the franchise led to critically lauded roles, including as Oscar-nominated performances in Pride & Prejudice in 2005 and The Imitation Game in 2014.
“I was viewed as s*** because of them, but I was given the chance to do the films for which I ultimately received Oscar nominations because they did so well,” she remarked.
Knightley also discussed the intrusive attention she received, which included unfounded rumors around her food and weight.
Post-traumatic stress disorder was diagnosed after a mental breakdown at age 22 as a result of the ongoing pressure.
“I knew I wasn’t [coping with an eating disorder],” she continued. I was aware that I was eating.
“I don’t remember it in that traditional trauma way. Since it is, after all, public humiliation, isn’t it? Then something will happen and I will suddenly have a very physical recall of it.
“Considering how young I was when it occurred, it’s clearly a part of my psyche,” she continued.
“I’ve managed to get around it.”
She said that a question on Mary-Kate Olsen’s anorexia during a press tour was disrespectful and insensitive.
“I recall that one of the Olsen twins had anorexia, and she went into a clinic,” she clarified. On a press trip, I recall being asked about it as if it were a joke. She was supposed to be embarrassed for getting anorexia treatment.
She has avoided big-budget movie franchises as a result of these experiences, which have influenced her professional choices.
“The hours are crazy,” she continued. You have no choice over the location, duration, or subject matter of the years you spend filming.
Knightley, a mother of two now, gives priority to endeavors that provide greater balance and are consistent with her principles.
“I keep getting offers about mothers or children passing away. Not possible. The things I’ve refused in the last few years have truly astonished me.
“Maybe I’ve needed that, which is why I’ve wanted it to be more pure entertainment.”
