Although the most of us avoid the dark web, a man with thirty years of experience as a hacker has shared some of the terrifying things he has encountered while working.
The dark web can hold horrific and depraved behaviors that can leave even the most resolute person scarred; in essence, it is the underbelly of criminal activity.
Those who are watching it are obviously either involved in it or interested in what’s happening in the dark side.
They may be there to hack.
Hackers typically search for interesting networks or data storage systems that could provide them with goods to sell or exploit to obtain financial resources.
Some people have chosen this route for themselves, even though it isn’t an honest one.
However, what is the experience of hacking on the dark web like?
A hacker with more than 30 years of expertise delving deeply into software and data has uncovered the most terrifying things he has ever seen, and it’s not for the faint of heart.
You can already tell what kind of information is on there because he began by recalling those “destructive attackers” who “want to see the world burn.”
The unnamed individual clarified that he used to think of himself as a “black hat” of the internet, meaning he was not constrained by any moral standards.
He now calls himself a “white hat,” a group of online good samaritans who are legally obligated, profess to serve for the greater good, and are frequently entrusted with identifying security software flaws.
The man clarified that part of his new job is to look for’significant risk’ vulnerabilities in systems.
The hacker stated to VICE in 2021: “I also do things like hunt the criminals who are targeting hospitals or who are targeting the businesses that I’m looking out for.”
“It is an attack technique that has been around for decades,” the mystery man stated, referring to ransomware, which is malicious software that blocks access to a computer system.
“Modern ransomware is usually a piece of malware that gets on your system, encrypts all of your data and then holds that hostage demanding that you contact the gangs that are operating it, paying them in some form of currency before they’ll give you the key that decrypts your data.”
His work can be quite challenging at times, just like the rest of us, but because he works with the dark web, his stakes are much higher.
“I’ve watched hospitals get encrypted and people are left with a choice: do I pay to decrypt the data or do I risk lives?” he added, describing some of the things he’s seen.
He continued by outlining how hacking has evolved over time: “When ransomware first emerged, it could cost hundreds or even thousands of euros for a single target.
“We’re now discussing larger settlements that easily reach the tens of millions. They offered $70 million for the campaign key, which would have unlocked all of the computers that were encrypted during the most recent attack. Therefore, we are discussing high-stakes gaming here.
“I don’t think we have to worry too much about our nuclear arsenal being taken over movie style and used against us,” he remarked, referring to the future. However, I do believe that we need to be concerned about significant effects on financial markets or possible effects on things like facilities that produce power.”
