In 28 Years Later, Cillian Murphy seems to be making a comeback, but not in the way you might think—this time, he’s a zombie.
The new trailer for the upcoming sequel, which stars Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, broke the news.
Ahead of its June 2025 release date, the trailer was released this morning.
This is the trailer:
After giving Juan Carlos Fresnadillo the helm for the often-forgotten Jeremy Renner-led 28 Weeks Later, Danny Boyle is back to direct the movie.
Boyle’s comeback and the return of Alex Garland, the writer of Civil War, Ex Machina, and 28 Days Later, make movie feel like a real follow-up to the 2002 horror classic.
The fact that Cillian Murphy seems to be returning as a zombie was the primary focus for many, even though the trailer is being praised as one of the “best of the year.”
“The one-second shot of Cillian Murphy is giving me a bone-deep sense of terror,” read one comment on r/movies.
“Seeing the ‘hero’ end up like that makes it feel more ‘real’ than a movie should have any right to lol.”
Regarding the trailer, someone else commented: “Very amazing. It sent shivers down my back. I am so looking forward to this.
“Also didn’t expect completely emaciated Cillian Murphy either.”
Someone said, “Murphy… Look how they massacred ma boi.”
On Twitter, someone else said, “Hahah, why did they do my man dirty.”
Although the trailer indicates that Cillian Murphy’s life did not quite turn out as planned following the conclusion of 28 Days Later, the film’s main focus is on Comer and Taylor-Johnson, the front-runner to play the next James Bond.
The next installment in the 28 Zombie series has already been revealed, in contrast to the lapse from Days to Weeks to Years.
In an interview, the movie’s co-star Ralph Fiennes stated that there would be two more sequels.
Variety corroborated this by stating that there will be a trilogy, with 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later II: The Bone Temple shot consecutively.
In an interview with GQ, Taylor-Johnson talked about rejoining director Danny Boyle, saying: “This filmmaker’s energy, enthusiasm, and charm are contagious.
Oh my god, his youthful demeanor and contagious energy have rekindled my love and enthusiasm for performing.
“The thrill and beauty of imagination are not something I lack naturally. I believe all of that is possible because of the film’s amazing setup.
June 20, 2025 is the release date for 28 Years Later.
