Ellen DeGeneres explains her and Portia’s decision to leave the US

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have made the decision to leave the United States after years of being in the public eye.

Major life shifts are nothing new to Ellen DeGeneres, and this one is no exception. She recently announced that she was retiring from the entertainment business, bringing an end to a lengthy and illustrious career.

After hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show for 19 seasons, the comedian and talk show presenter became well-known. She is now removing herself from the spotlight by announcing that her Netflix special, which was shot in August 2024, will be her final major endeavor.

It’s interesting to note that the news coincided with the 16th wedding anniversary celebration of her and her spouse, Portia de Rossi, which Ellen described as “both lucky and incredibly special.”

As if retiring weren’t enough, the couple is now getting ready to move overseas and make another significant life change.

DeGeneres is well known for her innovative career, which combined celebrity interviews, humor, and touching tales on her daytime talk show. However, allegations of a hostile work environment, including harassment and discrimination, prompted her to leave in 2022.

Her long-running show ended as a result of the aftermath from those accusations, and she spent a quieter few years away from the spotlight.

Despite not being directly charged with any wrongdoing, Ellen’s reputation was significantly damaged by the scandal. With the exception of her most recent comedy tour, Ellen’s Last Stand… Up, which she confirmed would be her last public appearance, she has maintained a pretty low profile since then.

“This is the last time you’re going to see me,” she added, reflecting on her career’s highs and lows. I’m done after my Netflix special.

When BuzzFeed released reports in 2020 describing problems on her show, the workplace crisis first came to light.

Both current and past employees’ testimonies were included in the exposé. “That ‘be kind’ bulls**t only happens when the cameras are on,” one of them asserted. It’s all for show.

According to another, “It’s her responsibility to go beyond what executive producers tell her.”

In her public response to the accusations, Ellen acknowledged that inappropriate things had happened behind the scenes.

Nonetheless, it was evident that the repercussions signaled a significant shift in her public perception and career.

As usual, Ellen has processed the events through humor in her stand-up acts.

She made a joke about her troubled career, stating: “I’ve been tossed out of show business twice. They will eventually expel me for the third time due to the fact that I am elderly, cruel, and queer.

Ellen has acknowledged the emotional toll, even though her jokes have added some humor to the issue.

The entire experience was ‘devastating,’ she said, adding that it affected her confidence for a long time.

In addition to her career, Ellen and Portia have undergone major personal transformations.

The couple, who are well-known for their passion for Montecito real estate, have now moved to the UK.

The reelection of former President Donald Trump reportedly had a role in their choice to leave the United States, according to reporting from The Wrap.

Ellen and Portia were compelled to act decisively by this incident.

After Trump’s triumph, the couple, who have a history of flipping houses in Santa Barbara County, made the decision to move quickly.

Before the election, they had already bought a charming house in the Cotswolds, around two hours from London.

Their aspirations to leave the US and start over abroad were only strengthened by Trump’s victory.

The couple’s move to the peaceful British countryside appears to be a conscious attempt to live a slower, more private lifestyle, even though they haven’t yet put their expansive Montecito home up for sale.

After the difficulties of the past few years, Ellen could need this new beginning to focus on recovery and self-discovery.

“The ‘Be kind’ girl wasn’t kind,” Ellen remarked in her Netflix special, For Your Approval, as she reflected on her experiences. With her trademark wit, she said, “People would have been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind if I had ended my show by saying, ‘Go f*** yourselves.'”
