The 30-year-old woman who was kidnapped from a hospital as a newborn by a phony nurse passed away.
When Abbie Humphries, formerly known as “Baby Abbie,” was removed from her cot at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham in 1994, she was only three hours old.
It took her parents, Roger and Karen, sixteen torturous days to find her.
At the time, Karen remarked, “We have just had a terrible amount of bad luck.”
“Normally, I try to see the bright side of things. It improves everyone’s mood.
Police were notified that Julie Kelley, a former dental nurse, had returned home with a newborn girl after telling her neighbors she was expecting a male.
Kelley was treated for a personality problem after entering a guilty plea to the charges. In order to start over, the family relocated to New Zealand.
But Abbie started having headaches after her mother, Karen, died of breast cancer in 2020 at the age of 59.
The daughter initially believed the headaches were caused by grief, but she soon learned that it was actually a grade four brain tumor.
“We’ve simply experienced a great deal of bad luck. Usually, I choose to see the bright side of things. “It improves everyone’s mood,” Abbie stated in 2021.
Her husband Karl Sundgren broke the heartbreaking news that Abbie had “peacefully passed away yesterday” while “surrounded by loved ones” on Monday, December 9.
Karl added: “She fought so hard with so much strength and grace for over four years and can finally rest.”
He continued: “Abbie was so strong, and her infectious smile will forever remain in our hearts.”
Before she passed away, Abbie said that, given what had happened, she had been adequately sheltered as a child.
“It was like everyone always knew who I was,” she stated.
When I was growing up, it seemed like Dad had flashbacks and needed to know where I was at all times, and Mum told me how deeply it had affected him. He would be a little odd and call me out of the blue.
“He felt what happened was his fault, because Mum was a midwife at the hospital and it wouldn’t have happened if she was in the room.”
On social media, many have been expressing their sympathies. One user said, “Rest in peace, beautiful Abbie.” I already miss you terribly.
“I am deeply saddened by this news. I’m sending love your way, along with your family. Another was added.
“What a lovely person on the inside and out. You both have my utmost admiration for your bravery, fortitude, and optimism throughout. A third commented, “I’m sending you, your family, and Abbie’s family a ton of love xxx.”
The Secrets She Keeps, a TV drama partially based on her kidnapping, was broadcast by the BBC in 2020.
