The renowned artist Sir Elton John, who is well-known for his colorful spectacles and commanding stage presence, has disclosed that he has “lost his eyesight.”
“It is hard for me to see [the show], but I love to hear it,” the singer of “Rocket Man” told the audience during the Devil Wears Prada musical’s gala night at the Dominion Theatre in London.
The musical’s composer, Sir Elton, who composed the music for the film and book of the same name, continued, “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight.”
On Sunday, the 77-year-old singer referred to his husband David Furnish as his “rock” as he walked him off the stage.
He still works on his artistic projects in spite of this setback, albeit in a new manner.
Sir Elton said on Good Morning America in late November that he had lost sight in his right eye due to a nasty eye infection he had contracted while in the South of France.
I haven’t been able to see for the past four months. “I don’t have the best left eye,” he said.
Sir Elton wrote the lyrics for the charity gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, but his vision problems prevented him from fully enjoying the event.
The music legend had to rely entirely on his sense of hearing for the event, which was organized to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation. During the event, Sir Elton told the BBC, “I have lost my sight and I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it.”
At the dinner, he publicly talked about his illness and showed his gratitude for his husband, demonstrating his tenacity. He remarked, “David has been my rock,” emphasizing the emotional assistance he has gotten during this trying period.
The chilly editor Miranda Priestly, played by Vanessa Williams in the musical The Devil Wears Prada, was modeled after Anna Wintour, who was said to be the real-life equivalent of the character in both the 2003 Lauren Weisberger novel and the movie.
Regarding the similarities between herself and Priestly, Wintour, who was present at the event, said: “It is for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities.”
Sir Elton thanked his family and medical staff for their unwavering support as he provided his fans with an Instagram update in September regarding his continued recuperation from the eye infection.
He said he had been “quietly spending the summer recuperating at home” and was pleased with his recovery’s advancement.
