According to reports, a Tesla Cybertruck struck a tree and retaining wall in California, killing three people.

According to several accounts quoting the state traffic patrol, three passengers were killed in the San Francisco Bay Area when the Cybertruck they were occupying collided with a tree and retaining wall.

According to KRON and KCRA, which cited the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened on Wednesday at approximately 3:08 a.m. in Piedmont, California, close to Seaview Avenue and Hampton Road. According to state police, a Tesla Cybertruck crashed after jumping a curb and colliding with a tree and retaining wall. The vehicle came to rest with its front end partially wrapped around the tree, as reported by California TV stations.

The Piedmont Police Department informed KRON that although the Cybertruck caught fire and burned completely, the battery within the vehicle did not blow up or catch fire.

Piedmont police and the California Highway Patrol were called by USA TODAY on Wednesday, but they have not responded.
“A tragic loss of life,” said Piedmont police chief.
According to troopers, a bystander who was walking by helped remove one of the people sitting in the front of the Tesla, KRON said. According to authorities, three other occupants were declared dead at the spot, and that individual was sent to a hospital in critical condition.

At the scene, neighbors told KRON that the deceased were local college students spending the holidays at home.

“This is just a tragic loss of life,” Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said to Oakland, California’s KTVU, a Fox TV affiliate. “We don’t know the cause of the collision and during the holiday season, our hearts go out to the families that are going to have to deal with this tragedy.”

The collision is being looked into by Piedmont police. Although officials have not yet ruled out drugs or alcohol as a factor, Bowers told KTVU that the vehicle’s speed was a potential contributing factor.
