On her Instagram account, gossip writer Tasha Lustig revealed some serious information about Sutton Foster and Hugh Jackman on October 26. The video producer pointed to a picture of the Music dude cast members looking so sweet on the red carpet and said, “Do you guys remember when I told you this man was up to no good?” Lustig continued by claiming that the Broadway stars intended to “soft launch” their relationship in public and that Jackman had “blindsided” his ex-wife, Deborra-lee Furness, by “running off with the mistress.”
Along with over 25,000 other people, Furness’ close friend, British media personality Amanda de Cadenet, wrote: “You are on point with this one.” Furness also “liked” the juicy post from her private account, which is only accessible to those she follows on the platform. Just so you know, my dear friend Deb is going to receive a makeover any minute now!
The social media activity appeared to support reports of a covert romance between Foster, 49, and Jackman, 56, who costarred in the Broadway production in 2022. (Jackman and his former partner Furness declared their separation in September 2023; on October 25, Foster filed for divorce from screenwriter Ted Griffin.) According to sources in the most recent Us Weekly issue, Jackman and Foster are currently together. During the show’s 11-month run, their friendship blossomed into a sexual relationship while they were married to other people.
According to a Foster source, “Hugh and Deb got divorced because of Sutton and Hugh’s relationship.” Since they are both such wonderful and kind people, we kept it quiet even though many others on Broadway knew. Everyone was considerate of their privacy. However, there was overlap and an affair. The insider claims that Jackman and Foster are still together, saying, “They are really happy now.”
For years, Jackman and Foster have been involved in the same Broadway circles. Jackman quipped that he had seen Foster feature in Thoroughly Modern Millie when she was “like, 4 years old” and disclosed that he had “watched everything she’s done” during a late-night appearance. In 2002, at the age of 27, Foster received a Tony Award for her performance. According to Raved Jackman, “[She’s] amazing.”
When they were cast in The Music Man, they clicked right away. Foster said to Vogue in 2022 that Jackman had grown to be one of her best friends, adding that they even attended family gatherings. (Foster and Griffin are parents to Emily, 7, whom they adopted in 2017; Jackson and Furness, 68, adopted a daughter, 19, in 2005, and a son, Oscar, 24, in 2000.) “We just spent Memorial Day with our families, but you usually go into these things thinking, ‘Well, I hope we get along,'” she clarified.
Foster also disclosed that she and Jackman had developed a private routine whereby they would sit on her dressing room floor and talk prior to every performance. Foster stated, “It’s such a wonderful thing,” while appearing on Live with Kelly and Ryan. We simply chat and catch up on each other’s days. “Making this amazing new friend has been one of the best parts of the whole thing,” she continued.
They frequently shared adorable pictures and videos of themselves swooning over one another on Instagram throughout rehearsals. Alongside a video of them rehearsing a dance, Jackman wrote, “This show is nothing without you.” Foster posted pictures of herself with Jackman on the red carpet on opening night, captioning them, “This man.” Being at your side is an honor. You are the greatest.
Even after witnessing her then-husband and Foster share passionate kisses on stage night after night, Furness had no suspicions. An industry source claims that Deborah Lee was taken by surprise when she learned about the affair during the course of the performance. “Apparently, Deborra-lee was the last to discover what Broadway’s worst-kept secret was.” As we now know, Jackman never disclosed the affair to us. The industry source goes on to say, “He didn’t own up to it.” Jackman’s contact with Foster persisted despite Furness’s desire to keep the marriage intact.
For decades, Jackman and Furness seemed like one of Hollywood’s most solid couples. The Wolverine star fell for Furness when they starred in the Australian series Correlli together. (Like Foster, Furness was his leading lady.) Just five months after meeting, Jackman popped the question. “I knew two weeks into meeting Deb that we were going to be together for the rest of our lives,” he once confessed.
During a 2016 talk show appearance, Jackman said his marriage “gets better and better” with time, adding, “She’s the greatest thing that ever happened to me.” The actor noted he was grateful he’d met her before he skyrocketed to fame in the early 2000s. “Everything that’s happened in my career and on screen, off screen, we’ve always done it together.”
In April 2023, Jackman celebrated his 27th wedding anniversary with a gushing post aimed at Furness. “Together we have created a beautiful family. And life,” he wrote. “Your laughter, your spirit, generosity, humor, cheekiness, courage and loyalty is an incredible gift to me. I love you with all my heart.”
While one source notes that the affair between Jackman and Foster had already begun at this point, another source says they first heard of a romance between the pair last November, two months after the actor announced his marriage was over. “We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage,” Jackman and Furness said in a statement at the time. “Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
A friend of the couple tells Us Furness was heartbroken. “[For a] woman who’s been in a marriage for [27] years who then discovers her partner was unfaithful and isn’t trustworthy, it’s a pretty devastating life experience,” says the friend, noting that Furness has been exceedingly gracious behind the scenes in order to protect her family. “I think many people were shocked [Hugh] could do this to her, especially as she’s the mother of his children, and they’ve navigated three decades of life together,” says the friend. “A little respect may have been in order.” A source familiar with Furness says she’s a survivor: “[Deborra-lee] is a strong, resilient, creative woman.”
